WEST CHESTER TWP. —

A new store here bills itself as the first to bring Bollywood-style polish and glamor to southwest Ohio.

Pink Peacock Boutique held its grand opening celebration last Friday at 7742 Dudley Drive just east of Interstate 75’s Tylersville Road interchange. The new business carries a wide variety of handmade items from India and Africa, including clothing, beauty essentials, scarves, jewelry, handbags and cushion covers.

“We have everything from around the globe,” said owner Amandeep Kaur. “I wanted to do it like an international gift shop. It’s not just for the Indian community. Anybody, any culture, any race can shop here.”

Kaur said she researched the greater Cincinnati business scene and found no other shop offering India’s rainbow of colors and styles.

“There are a lot of Indian people here but there is no Indian store where they can just go and buy it,” she said.

It was a challenge to establish a business that selects, orders and import products from around the world via suppliers in Indian and Kenya to fill the 1,377-square-foot storefront, Kaur said.

“It just didn’t happen overnight,” she said. “It’s months and months of planning.”

Kaur said she also supports area artisans by stocking Pink Peacock with their creations.

Working as a disability claims examiner for 14 years in New York was “taking a big toll” on Kaur, but opening her own boutique there would not have been possible, she said.

Her move to southwest Ohio meant being able to launch the new venture in an area filled with cherished memories.

“My parents lived in Cincinnati for years and I used to come visit them and I loved the area and I loved how family-oriented and how low-key the city was,” she said.

Opening a store in West Chester Twp. helps draw from the existing Indian community, whose places of worship are nearby on Tylersville Road in West Chester and Cincinnati-Dayton Road in Liberty Twp., Kaur said.

Shivali Gaba of Mason said the boutique’s wide variety impressed her so much that she purchased two necklaces and ordered two outfits.

“She’s got a really large selection … and it’s really well-made, that’s what I love about it,” Gaba said. “She doesn’t have the cheap stuff.”

Amanda Price of Liberty Twp., a representative for direct sales purses and accessories company Miche, purchased two rings on her visit to Pink Peacock Boutique. She said she likes not only the store’s variety, but the unique nature of its items.

“It just seems like a really fun store,” she said. “It’s bright and fun and has a mix of little things to look at.”
