Upgrades include a new covered stage, more green space, new shaded areas, and interactive splash pads.

West Chester Township is investing in the future of its community gathering space with a $3.6 million renovation of The Square @ Union Centre. This will be the first major update since the venue opened 15 years ago, enhancing functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics.

Construction is set to begin in July 2025 and is expected to be complete in time for the 2026 concert and event season.

Enhancing the Community Experience

West Chester Township Administrator Lisa Brown emphasized the significance of the project. “We’re really excited to do this. It’s a nice update for the community. We are modernizing the Square to better serve residents and enhance the experience for all who visit.”

The renovations will focus on making the space more versatile for concerts, festivals, and other public events. A new stage will be built on the opposite side of the Square, featuring a covered roof to minimize event cancellations due to weather. The stage will also be equipped with a screen for viewing parties and special presentations.

“We are reorienting the stage to improve sound quality and create a better viewing experience for attendees,” Brown added. “The new setup will direct sound outward to an open area, reducing echoes caused by surrounding buildings.”

New Features for an Inviting Atmosphere

The Square’s makeover will include a mix of functional and aesthetic improvements:

  • New covered stage to improve acoustics and reduce weather-based event cancellations.
  • More green space and shaded areas to provide improved seating and versatile space for events.
  • Installation of two interactive splash pads flanking the new stage, replacing the existing fountains.
  • Upgraded decorative concrete barriers to enhance security while maintaining an open and welcoming environment.
  • Enhanced lighting around the iconic clock tower, adding a dynamic visual element to the space.

A Shortened 2025 Concert Season

As part of the transition, the Township’s popular Takeover Thursday summer concert series will be adjusted for the 2025 season. Concerts will begin a week earlier than usual, kicking off on May 22 and concluding on June 26. The full lineup will be announced soon.

West Chester Township looks forward to unveiling a refreshed and modernized Square that will better serve residents and visitors alike. Stay tuned for project updates and additional details as construction progresses.
